As iPad fans everywhere eagerly anticipate the next iPad, bloggers report that the wait may soon be over. According to online reports “familiar with the matter” next generation iPads are already being manufactured and here is what we can expect.
- A built-in camera. Blogs reveal the new iPad has “at least one camera on the front of the device for features like video conferencing”. Facetime is coming to iPad. At this point an iPad 2 without Facetime would be seen as a major disappointment since this feature is now standard on the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch.
- A faster processor. As reported previously, Apple knows they need to upgrade the iPad processor to stay competitive with increasing good tablet competition.
- More memory. Whether or not this means more RAM or more memory for storage is not clear but it seems likely that iPad 2 will get a bump up to 512MB of RAM to match the iPhone 4 and we would not be surprised to see a 128GB iPad become available.
- A thinner and lighter design. One of the only initial complaints against the iPad was that it could be a bit lighter. Leave it to the designers and engineers at Apple to figure out how to continously shrink technology.
None of these features should come as a surprise to those who have been following the iPad 2 rumors. One thing the blogs noted the iPad 2 is not getting is a higher resolution display, citing “the resolution of the display will be similar to the first iPad”. According to an online review, “People familar with the situation said Apple has had trouble improving the display technology, in part because of the iPad screen’s larger size compared with the iPhone”.
